• Process Drama

    A tool for transformation

  • What is it

    Process Drama is an experiential form of drama in which the participants create meanings for themselves through the process of experiencing the characters of the drama, rather than acting out a solution for an audience. Both the participants and facilitator often step in and out of roles to empathise with the characters and reflect on their real lives.

     

    Originating from education where drama is practiced as a learning medium, Process Drama is now widely applied from inside the classroom to workplace training. Through the process of using dramatic elements which often incorporate feelings of the whole body, a more comprehensive and holistic empathisation process leads to substantial transformation of participating individuals.

     

    Organisations increasingly adapt this technique to encourage their members to “walk in someone else’s shoes” and experience selected events or controversial topics. During the Process Drama workshop, participants may be invited to take up roles from a fictional story or real life event. They may pose a still image, express a thought verbally, create a short scene, or improvise as a group. Props such as writing tools may sometimes be used.

    Design Thinking

    The IDEO approach includes five steps with a strong emphasis on the first one: empathise. Process Drama works best in raising empathy. The experiential process itself invites participants to experience the life of others.

    SDGs learning

    The key message of all the 17 UN 2030 SDGs is “leave no one behind” implying an understanding of ourselves and others in order to walk in solidarity for a global goal for good. Process Drama is applicable for individual SDGs or a general theme, providing real or fictional scenarios where the participants can experience themselves as part of the problems and/or part of the change.

  • What is required for a workshop

    An effective workshop will take at least 2 hours. Optimal duration is 2.5 hours with a flexibility to be extended to 3 hours. Classroom settings with a shorter time span (eg. 45 min.) will need at least two sessions. The optimal size is 16-20 pax. For bigger group size, two or more workshops are recommended.

    CHEUK Ho Yin (Yee-On) is trained as a professional applied theatre facilitator in the Hong Kong Art School. Prior to that, CHEUK has over 30 years of experience in theatrical production taking up key positions of Director, Script-writer, Actor and Producer.
